Fwd: 8/12 Sandor's Skyline Express 630 Peets

Beaut!

Here's the view from the back:

The night before I swapped out the battery in my HR monitor as I've
been
missing it and I know I've been running a bit hotter than I've
intended
on some recent rides.  It probably won't stop me but at least I'll
know
just how for over I've gone.

Rolled out the door in Bernal about 6:37.  Later than intended and
foggier than
expected.  I was doing the math in my head as to how fast I'd have to
push to
make it to Great Highway by 7AM.  I was rolling down Sloat about 6:59
and
noticed a rider heading up Skyline, I hoped that was the last of the
fast
group.  I could see the turnout up ahead and there was either a small
group
of riders gathered or maybe a sign.  It was a sign so I rode through,
squinted
through the much denser fog than was covering the mission and could
only make
out cars heading for me.  I remembered that solo rider and adjusted my
position from off the back of the fast group to off the back of the
chill
peloton.  I headed back towards Skyline and was thinking I should try
to
catch them on the hills since once we got to the down or Sawyer Camp
Trail
progress would essentially be nil.  I was pushing up the hills and
trying
to remember what they topped out at, squinting through the fog for any
sign
of other bikes.  Finally 2 riders materialized out of the soupy
atmosphere
but instead of up ahead they came from behind.  Once they caught up I
recognized Space and Trinh.  I jumped on their wheel and hung for oh,
20
seconds before I realized the folly.  Then came another rider and
again
I started to hold his wheel and glancing down at my HR sanity was
restored
and I went back to my own pace not wanting to start a bonk this early
in the
ride.  We regrouped up at the top of the hill and our numbers grew
from 4 to
maybe 9, the missing riders having been slowed by a flat tire.  Once
we set
off we were pretty cohesive.  There wasn't a lot of pacelining, pretty
much
everyone cruising down in a loose pack.  As we passed under trees the
condensation had made puddles and our tires were kicking up rooster
tails
giving us a little taste of the road.  Once we got to Swayer Camp
Trail things
were fairly chill but moving at a good clip.  We exited and returned
by
the 280 on-ramp.  Things picked up a bit and we were buzzing around
corners.  I was having a conversation in my head trying to remember
the difference between early and late apex when I over cooked a corner
and
piled it in.  I bled off as much speed as I could before I hit dirt
and
kept it upright.  Then the dirt shoulder dropped into what was about a
3
foot or so ditch and I knew I was going down.  There was a fallen
branch
I tried to not impale myself on but aside from that I just let the
endo happen.

Final count was popped lip, scratch on chin, some leg scrapes, hole in
leg
warmers, off kilter front brake, off center rear wheel and my left
front
lever slipped over a bit.  Sore shoulder but no broken clavicles (yay!
last
time I endoed this was not the case).  Trinh stopped and rode with me
up to
the end of SCT.  From there Trinh turned off and my busted ass
rejoined the
group the TTT started but honestly my legs were pretty cooked and it
was all
I could to to hang on.  I finally dropped off the back at the point
where
my ODO indicated 30mi and I was happy to ride the rest solo.  Once I
rolled
through the intersection at Woodside I spotted the rest of the crew.
They
had feigned another flat but I know in my heart they were waiting up.
From
there 1 other rider dropped off and I followed his lead at about mile
39.

All told my ride clocked in at 2:40 moving time, avg HR of 165 and
46.76 miles.

Fwd: 8/12 Sandor's Skyline Express 630 Peets

Not so much.  It was a solid effort, but mildly hampered by howling headwinds/rain/fog in SF, a couple of flats, Steve's faceplant on SCT, and a bit of miscommunication.  I didn't know that "TTT" meant "Trinh Time Trial", which means "surging off the front in an attempt to weaken by repeated accelerations the other riders".  Clearly Nils and Trinh are in league under the aegis of Team Bubble Up.

But I never make excuses for weak performance (much), so I have to chalk up the failure the wimpy riding by all but space, who gamely attempted to go as slow as the rest of us, but alas failed.

stats:

- 2:07:10 rolling time from sloat/GH
- 19.8mph rolling avg.
- ~50% attrition

with marius, nils himself, and some teamwork I think <2h is definitely possible (from sloat).

Fwd: 8/7 Bayway Racepace RRR 6:30 - One for the record books!

As penance for dropping off the back at San Carlos, John and I got
lost after the EPA
bike path and turned the wrong way on Embarcadero. This led us past a
dump and
onto an unpaved bike path section where we were joined by a member of
the Google
Cyclocross team on his brand new Ridley Cross bike. When we finally
rejoined the route
and hit Bayshore, we were passed by Kemler who was using his superior
route knowledge
and a cheeky run of a red light to leave us groveling OTB in our
bonked out state. Happily
John invited me into no-name where I could commisserate with Scott and
briefly congratulate
him on his accomplishments until I realized the full impact of the
wonder that is a
Google Cafeteria.

Final Stats:
1 ancient Clif Bar on the bridge to nowhere
3 scrambled eggs with various goodness
Apple Muffin
Mini-burrito
20 or so strawberries
20 or so grapes
OJ and water

You guys are living the dream.

8/7 Bayway Racepace RRR 6:30 - One for the record books!

From: Eric Cattell ☮
NOOOOOoooooo!   I liked having the record!  Congrats.  You might have just inspired me to try and ride to MV again ;-)

8/7 Bayway Racepace RRR 6:30 - One for the record books!

ride report:

Per Sandor's command, 8 SF2G gladiators convened at the colosseum (Ritual) today at 6:30, faced with the grim task of dethroning reigning team-time-trial champions Hobinator & Cattell on the mortal roads of the bayway.

Knowing nothing less than a 21+ mph average pace would challenge the 1:59:58 record, a fast pace was decreed from the start, and a rare paceline was observed on even Valencia.

As Trinh took the front, Kemler opted out early (despite good fitness), as the pace was inconsistent with his Tranquilo state of mind.  Trinh proceeded to throw down an unsustainable pace, knowing his services would cease in san mateo, and kept the average creeping ever upward.

Space & Julian then took over, churning out a disciplined 23-26mph over long stretches, and got up to 20mph average by millbrae.  The group split in two around foster city, but a Menchov-like slick-surface solo crash by yours truly (see attached) in the tight-left just after the 92 underpass enabled a regrouping, and the speed was increased to compensate for the delay.

Somewhere around the Holly/Whipple detour, the group shrank to 4, and the average peeked over 21 mph coyly, then recoiled in the confusion of the Bridge to Nowhere, which was extra loose and featured freshly applied redwood chips (ideal for road bikes).

Calculations revealed a new record was within reach, and speed ratcheted up again.  Tremendous leadouts by space and julian stretched the elastic but it didn't break, and at Charleston/Rengstorff, the clock stopped.  Final stats:

- 1:59:22 total rolling time - new record! (provisional)
- 21.2 mph rolling average
- 2 crashes (me and John, no significant injuries)
- 4 riders at the end
- 8:50 arrival time, ~2:07 actual elapsed time ritual->G
- wind: 3mph NW (per weather.com) - mildly favorable
- riders: space, trinh, murph, john, kemler, sandor, julian, yours truly

nice work dudes!

I am moving out of the city and I want to set personal records for
both bayway and skyline.  I'm going to start with bayway this week and
probably do Skyline the following week.  I have already gotten Trinh
to agree to set the pace/break but I think he will not make it all the
way.  His endurance has really gone down recently ;-)  Scott said he
wants to break the all time record of 1:59:58 but said something about
not being able to do it alone.  I think he needed some help pedaling
his bike.  Space also commited to the ride though I am not sure if
that was skyline and bayway or just skyline.

The pace will be fast.  People will get dropped.

So who wants to set a new course record Thursday morning?
[I'd like to do it earlier but I have to recover from the marathon yesterday.]

--

I'm planning on being there, we need Hobe and Sean Dawson. I'll
actually go to Google and take my pulls if you guys can sneak me into
the cafeteria - and if we do a general regroupment after Cortland and
San Bruno to make sure all the roulers are in place.

We will need to decide how to address the San Carlos section - do we
take Veterans to Maple or do we cross at Whipple and go over the
bridge allowing Sandor one last bridge to nowhere run.
I'll be there, definitely.  By the way, taking Maple these days is soooo slow with all the lights.  It's gotta be whipple to have a good shot at the record.  Sandor, when do you leave?  If you could delay the bayway attempt until the bike path has reopened, and Marius and wickman et al can go, it might be better.

I am leaving at the end of the month.  Unfortunately I may only get two more sf2g's in.  There will also a racepace skyline.  I know that is more Maruis' style so we should get him and some of the other's out for that.  I think Hobe is out.  I saw his status this morning said Dublin or someother faraway site.

I am open to other routes, but this one does not look like too much fun, a lot of time on Camino Real.  I guess I would rather do a good time on the std bayway and not break the reccord than to try to cheat for a good time by going a short cut.  I actually have not done the San Carlos since the closure.  I will have to punt to someone who has done bayway recently on the best way through that.

-sandor

yeah the detour is an issue, as it's kinda hectic going over holly overpass and getting squashed by an SUV is a high price to pay for the record.  there's also quite a bit of traffic in general on the detour.  we could try for the as-yet unset "bayway while the water main is being replaced in redwood city" record ;)

but it might be best to try this after aug. 15(?) when the old route is back in force.  bonus: hobinator and m3 will be available.

Re: Le Partycar

yeah, friday just had too much bikeness to fit it all in.  had to sacrifice partycar & CM & gestalt for tgif kegs/band & bike film fest & post-party.  BFF was solid, especially the live performance by Ines Brunn (holy sh*t!), Road to Roubaix, the waffle bike, and the cool music video by Bat for Lashes (mmmmm).

as for the friday NRLB, I think we have a new non-BTWD record - 26 people! damn!  27 if you include solo warrior altendorf.  don't think there were any mechanicals and everyone had a sporting good time, despite the Industrial rd. bypass and lack of the 'cross section/bridge to nowhere.  was cool to see a strung-out peloton along lagoon road/sierra pt pkwy - such was the size of the group that it looked "together" despite being spread out over a mile by the Hobinator's stretching of the elastic.

Those of you that may be new to this... here's how it works:
- We meet at the grassy knoll @ Charleston & Huff, 17:17 (that's 5:17
for you 'murricans)
- Ride our pretty bikes over to some liquor store to purchase le biere
- Catch the 5:46 Caltrain
- Upon arrival, proceed to Gestalt @ 16th & Guerrero where there's
double-decker bike parking, lamb sausages (yeah yeah, I know it's more
sf2gy to eat vegan kielbasa, but I like lamb, ok?), and more beer than
a partycar full of sf2gers can drink in one night.

Since attendance records were broken in # of bikers today, let's try
to break the record for partycar attendance as well! What better way
is there to celebrate your first SF2G than with your first partycar?

Thurs 7/24 bayway 6:20RR/6:30R

Holy Hell,

I thought we were all in for a nice mellow style bayway.  I should
have been tipped off something was amiss when the first riders pulling
past Martha's arrived about 5 minutes faster than is the norm.  I
scarfed down the last bit of coffee cake and tossed out most of my tea
and caught Trinh's wheel just as he hit Bayshore.  We cruised up
toward Paul ave. and I noticed there were some sweet bikes rolling
around I don't think I've seen before of the Ti and Carbon
variety( Moots, Parlee I'm talking to you among others ).  We hit the
final climb and I hung on Lorenzo's wheel for the duration(damn he has
some fast climbing cadence).  We hit the light and rolled past the
Bayshore Caltrain stop.  I believe at that point there were 2 off the
front, Lorenzo and Hobe.  I paced with them for a bit and decided I
shouldn't kill myself just yet so started to drop back.  Trinh blew
past me followed by a rider on a red Bridgestone( or was it a Ritchey)
with panniers.  I grabbed the panniered riders wheel and cruised for
maybe half a K.  Not carrying anything like that load of cargo I
sheepishly moved to the front thinking I could help him out, my fellow
steel framed brethren in the non-space bike struggle to stay afloat.
I also thought wtf, didn't someone say mellow?  I could see the 3 tiny
figures ahead and hoped to bridge up to them but never quite seemed
able to bridge the gap.  Once we got to the stretch of parking lots
the sprinklers seemed to give the lead group pause and I managed to
catch up.  Trinh was slowly pedaling and I think I said the only thing
I could think of as I passed, something like 'brutal'.  From there I
caught the 2 leaders at the light right around the time the FrenchGuy
showed up ( sorry man, i forgot your name but you had full FDJ kit the
first time i met you so you're forever FrenchGuy in my head ).  A
couple lights later FG asked about Scott's whereabouts and someone
said he was in the chase group chillaxin (doh!  that sounds sweet).
From here on out Hobe pretty much dragged us all along at around 22MPH
with the other 3 of us taking token pulls at the front.  We got a
brief draft from a bus around SFO and continued on rolling past the
BART meetup at 7:25.  Once we hit midway 3 of us stopped to refill our
bottles, FrenchGuy went on ahead.  While Hobe was taking a natural
break Lorenzo came over and we both agreed that we were going at an
absurd rate of speed and agreed that it was about all we could to to
suck Hobe's wheel.  We mused about dropping back We headed out and
once we got to feral cat way all animals must have heard the whistling
of the Hobinator up front and all but 2 wisely kept out of sight.  We
took the detour and returned to the normal route on Maple about a
block after we reabsorbed FrenchGuy.  Once FrenchGuy turned off Hobe
disappeared, Lorenzo said something about Hobe having dropped his
water bottle on the tracks, we theorized he got tired of dragging our
slow asses along and likely opted to bopping onto 101 for the
remainder.  For much of the ride in my head i was debating whether
Hobe is more like a turbine or just a big diesel engine(in Phil
Liggett jargon).  From there on out it was a quick turn past the marsh
and EPA.  I turned off at my usual spot and got to work 18 minutes
faster than any other time previously.

I show a moving speed of 19.7, moving time of 2:03(from Martha's).

thnx!

uneventful ride, marius again bore no gloves or socks on his hands but lost no pedal cranks this time.
the industrial way was taken to bypass both the construction and the bridge to nowhere.

since apparently the 4k rule has been extended to 40k, i did the most chillaxin of all, but still made it to breakfast at no name.

7/16 Bayway RR 630

Todays stage was a cool and foggy affair.  From around the Lagoon
there were 3 riders off the front.
I dropped back to the main pack for a less hammerific day once we
traversed the hotel parking lots.

Lots of 20MPH+ efforts with just about everyone taking a turn at the
front made this a little less than
a chill effort.

The main field was composed of equal parts Google and non-G riders
until Trinh peeled off to
his secret lair halfway through.

David claimed to have never seen the feral cats the trail is named
for, at one point claming
the cats i pointed out were actually just rocks.  David will be
seeking psychiatric help on
other future rides.

This is one of the fastest sf2g I have on record with an avg speed of
~17 and moving time ( from Martha Bros. ) of 2:21.

Skyline Thurs 6/26; Mon 6/20, Wed 7/2

Ride report:

4 visible riders met this morning: Julian, Brandon, Liam and Topher.  1 stealth rider left 90 mins late: Andrew.  The 4 sunk up from behind on an oversized weed whacker on SCT.  Julian, doing an impression of Don Quixote at a windmill, attempted an attack under the the monster's neck, near its vicious gnawing teeth.  The monster hesitated in surprise, and the four slipped around its less dangerous side.  90 minutes later Andrew faced the monster head on, again it hesitated and he too could slip past unscathed.

We all parted ways in the vicinity of Crystal Springs and 92.  Topher and Liam hung a right at 92.  Followed 1, Stage Road, Cloverdale and Gazos Creek southward, reaching their offsite in Santa Cruz at 12:30.  Andrew rode in to Santa Cruz 90 mins latter.  80 mi, 5000ft of climbing, 5.5 hours.  Very Respectable.

Now that I have a spare moment I wanted to say what a blast I had this morning. And, it being my very first SF2G ride, I thought I'd write up a little somethin' somethin'

So my ride report really has to start the night before... well actually we'll start even before that. So I've been super excited about this SF2G business for some time. I just moved up here from the Santa Monica office on Monday -- and down in Santa Monica I rode with the UCLA Triathlon team (where I was, perhaps unsurprisingly, on the UCLA Triathlon team)

So anyways, I've been very excited but very nervous. Nervous primarily because I had no idea what the skill level was going to be AND I've been on quite a few "no drop" rides that ended up being drop rides. And, since I had no idea how to get to Google, getting dropped would be a problem.

So flash forward to last night - there I was laying on my temporary bed (read: my couch) last night at like 12:30AM thinking "shit, I'm going to be dropped... and then I'm going to be screwed". This went on for some time but it seems eventually I fell asleep.

Then I woke up this morning and was like "Oh god... what do these people carry their stuff in? Do they carry stuff? Are they all super speed demons who would never carry any sort of extra weight (like flip flops) because it'll slow them down? But I need my flip flops! Well...I could walk around barefoot today... but then again probably not...Oh god oh god oh god...."

Eventually I got out the door.

And from there on out it was smooth sailing (except for that one "mountain biking" second on that narrow evil bit). Everyone was super friendly and it was great to see so many people riding!

So thanks everyone! When I get back in two weeks you'll definitely see me out there a lot. Bayway any day!

And also, I don't have all that many friends up in the SF area... and, realizing that cyclists are the best sort of people, I'd love to hang out sometime! I live on Isis street - which is between 12th/13th/Folsom/Harrison

See you guys out there soon!

I think we had over 20 *in ritual* once last fall (neither BTWD nor
Halloween).  I have pictures -- truly a sight.

Ride tomorrow 6/6/08

It is hard to say I let you win a sprint or two when you fly by me at
34 mph. That's a stomp job. Next time please post-up when you have 10
bike lengths on me. We'll chase the sprint points again.

soothing skyline - wed 6/4 - 0630 peets

Ride Report:

Donal, Mike, Mike, Misha and Joe. We must have rolled out of Peet's at
around 6:45. The Panhandle and GG Park were fun because of the
sprinklers. Then Joe took us along Lower Great Highway, which spared
us from the considerable ocean breeze. We took Skyline Drive instead
of Skyline Highway, thus avoiding the dangerous lane crossing at
Rt35/Rt1 intersection. Mike's dérailleur got stuck in the small cog,
which made our ride even more soothing than we anticipated. Windy
going across the San Andreas Lake damn, and then I came off San
Andreas Road and into the brush -- I took at downhill curve too fast,
too wide. No harm done. The rest of the ride was fairly uneventful.
Joe peeled off at Redwood City, a 2h 51m moving time got the rest of
us to Slice in time for yummy Pancakes!

Bayway 5/22/08 - 7 or 7:30 rollout

renegade ride report:

plan: maintain lead advantage for as long as possible.

our hearts beating much slower than 200 bpm, the renegade crew of mary, mike, and yours truly met up at the hip new sidewalk cafe at 1425 florida (check it out! mochas until 6:33am!). after discerning that mike does not equal misha but does equal "guy with sliding seatpost" equal "guy with regular pants", absent misha was rude awakened at home by a call from mike and we were on our way.

just after the T-turd muni crossing, a mysteryman in a google jersey swept up mike and thence all that could be heard was "help! i can't let go of his back wheel!". next he was seen alone, fixing a flat in EPA, shortly after the 20mph peloton gained green light advantage near a giant pile of dirt on the road by Sun.

after a truck driver on the corner of charleston x amphitheater revealed the time as 9:23, this usually crittenden-bound ride took advantage of 7 extra minutes at No-Name, right as the diligent kitchen employees grabbed the yogurt ladle out of my hand to "move it" (read: compost perfectly edible food at 9:30 sharp).

16.0 mph rolling average with the help of northerly wind helped the hangover.

Ksen

PS: for those who enjoyed a first-time semi-leisurely SF2G on bike to work day last week - do not let the elite squad's admirable pace discourage you from coming out to ride the Bayway again. indicate your desire to ride and i'm sure someone will lead the way.

Ride Report

Plan: fast bayway, <2:15 ride time

Met up with the likes of the hobinator, jacob, sandor, bc, and osmond at ritual, 6:45, and departed on time at 7:02, bent on reeling in the renegade crew of ksenya, mary, and mike, who left 30 minutes previous.

Things proceeded briskly and bc & jacob decided to take in some scenery around the airport, and so an early invocation of the 4k rule was made, and the hobinator dropped the hammer.

Then, having recently quit google, shaved his girlfriend's head, and traded his soul to Satan for a new set of legs, IronOthman, coincidentally sporting helmet # 666, coyly sat in the peloton until the Feral Cat Freeway, then calmly took the front and proceeded to drop the field, while smirking the entire time.  Only with Sandor's powerful sprint and 110% of my normal maximum heart rate were we able to reestablish contact in a slower section.  BaalzebOthman claimed he didn't notice he was going fast and continued on his merry way.

Re-established contact with bc/jacob after they took the foster city shortcut, subtracting 2+ miles and causing the officials to disqualify their attempt, then finally captured the fugitive breakaway around mile 33, delivered suitable encouragement and moved on.  Came across a flat-tired Mike in E.P.A., yelled "good luck buddy!" in a cheerful manner and accelerated thru a slalom course of schoolkids.

final stats:
- 42.5 miles
- 2:05 ride time
- 20.0 mph rolling average
- 200 bpm(!) observed max. heart rate
- 3167 calories burned (according to mr. garmin... don't believe it)
- no chilaquiles, dammit

5/15 NRLB Skyline Bike 2 Work Extravaganza

Gruppetto Ride Report:

- I woke up at 5:40am for dog walking duty and I was already sweating
- Met a huge group of BTWD riders at Peets - probably 30 in all
- The slow roll out of the Peet's parking lot was the only time our
group stayed as one
- The speed racers Space, Marius, Nick P. and 17 other riders took off
on a brisk pace
- Our gruppetto took a more leisurely pace down Skyline enjoying the
scenery, taking pictures, getting sunburned, etc.
- The conditions on Lower Sawyer Camp Trail was perfect.
- Our gruppetto split into three groups towards the end of the ride
and my group (Heather, Andrew, and me) carried the lantern rouge onto
campus.
- Congrats to all the 1st time Skyliners (Lauren, Heather, Caroline,
Andrew, Sean, Donal)

Bay Way: S.Norfolk variation

This is pretty much it. I'm not sure how I'd draw a line on a google
map, because after leaving Oracle Pkwy (heading north) the route is
mainly on cycle paths until La Selva St. This untraceable part is
definitely the funnest part, and I'd be happy to describe it if
anybody is interested in trying it. There are a couple of fiddly
parts, which aren't very obvious. Kind of like the Bair Island
section.  I've not tried the Google variation for the Foster City
section, so I cannot compare with the S.Norfolk route. The Google
route looks like it could be more scenic, but S Norfolk St is a
reasonable cycling road. There's cycle path for much of it and
generally it's low traffic. Also, it's very direct.

Fri 5/8 NRLB RRR 6.30

I should also add that Steve, of Danger Inc., inflicted a series of searing attacks but mercifully peeled off for PA before he could levy a punishing sprint on bayshore.  sadly for him, he declined my invitation, which is open to all non-G'ers, to partake of breakfast vittles, and had to taste the cold, bitter cereal of defeat.

I got there in time for chilaquiles, which were MONEY, best goog breakfast item ever, crushing all mini-burrito varieties.  fortunately the "sorry you missed breakfast, SUCKER" signs did not prevent my fellow riders from enjoying same.

but despite that, I don't have any interest in bypassing the 'cross section, as it's one of the more fun parts to an otherwise fairly flat/straight ride.  I especially dig the wintry months, when it becomes a Mudbog, good times.  we'll have to agree to disagree about that part (Lider is with me at least).

skyline is fantastic, but in practical terms is not that convenient for an inner-missionite like myself, so it's rserved as a special treat, once a month or so (when Marius takes the day off).

RWS2G riders photo

Swami on wheels rolls in from Redwood City with his disciples!

Thursday, April 17, 2008

4/18 novice, quick addict RWS2G rider looking to jump in with SF2G NRLB bayway

swami - i have to disagree about the bus.  the shuttle is crowded, hot, teeming with cellphone jabberers, and it dwells on the 101, a wretched hive of scum and villainy if there ever was one.

by contrast, the roads of bayway are sparsely driven, often sans-cars paths, and with some exceptions generally pleasant and fragrant.  further, you will, on your bike, enjoy the pleasing company of a litany of eccentric characters, not the least of which are ksenya the Russian, eric the Vegan, marius the mighty Viking, trinh the Flagellant, space the Vanquisher, lucas the 747-control-panel-on-a-bike-guy, bk Broiler (6' 4" with afro), lorenzo the Uncoldable, and all manner of others, including yours truly, perhaps the weirdest of the bunch.

and the bridge from nowhere to nowhere is cool, you must embrace it.  it's better than the true bridge to nowhere, which is on the marshes of foster city or so and just terminates like a pier.

btw, map is here: http://groups.google.com/group/sf2g/web/the-bayway-40mi-1000

I'd guess RWS is about 25 miles into the ride, so you might expect the SF crew to show up on Twin Dolphin/Marine Pkwy around 8?  something like that?  I bet Lucas knows, he's data-driven, like a decision.

4/10 Skyline 630 Peets

Ride Report:
  • "Always ride".  I almost bailed last night, and even this morning just didn't "feel up to it".  I'm glad I did of course.  I'm always glad.  "Always ride".
  • Scott and I cruised up at a mellow pace to Cañada where we saw the smoke puffs of the oncoming train.  We did a Uee and did my best to keep ahead of the train, and provide them with a bright orange target to hunt down.  I thought maybe I had maintained the gap, but after the final rise I check my shoulder and there's fixed gear Marius barelling down at 180rpm.  He and Space caught, and descimated this quarry today.
  • Panting and puffing, the small lead group slowed up for Officer Ponciarello at one of those ridiculous red octagon things.  Apparently, someone in the back of the pack did not, and I could hear sirens as I got near Bob's market.
  • In the interest of schedules, Julian and I had to leave our fallen bretheren behind.  Fast ride from there.  When The Big Brit isn't racing is pretty much the only time I can keep up with him.

4/10 CBWYRRR 7:30

Ride report:

Daniel and I met up at 7:20ish at Ritual among ... other people? That's right, it turns out that other people actually know about Ritual if you're there after 6:30. Rolled out at 7:30 and proceeded to Bayway via Cortland. Daniel (on his swanky new Parlee) set the pace for the vast majority of the ride, we me trying to keep up. Stopped once at the halfway point for an energy bar, then kept going. Relatively uneventful ride except for a black cat crossing our path at FCF, but we agreed that it was more brownish and rode on. I was pretty proud of myself for keeping up the pace until the second to last straightaway when Daniel dropped the hammer and pulled 25mph out of somwhere, leaving me to catch up with him at the light. In a bit of perfect timing, we met up with the Skyline crew for the final straightaway, and it turns out that it was matching jersey pairs day. Overall, an awesome ride. Still made it to the plex by 10 with our 7:30 rollout thanks to a blistering average speed of 17.3mph. Woo!

millbway wednesday - 4/2 - civilized - 7:11/7:37 train

Ride report:

Met at 24/m BART as per the plan. 4 bikers: Scott, Pedro (first
time?), Brian (first time!), and myself. Rolled out from Millbrae
around 7:45 and set a fastish/comfortable pace. Blew through the
rest-stop before FCF and kept on going. (In fact, we never stopped
during the entire ride except for lights, and not even then
sometimes.) Othman was somewhere ahead of us but we never caught up to
him. Later on we found out that he had waited for a bit bit the chill
had kept him moving on. The sun never really came out, but the weather
held despite forcasted rain and we rolled into Google right around
9:30 after a push down the last stretch. Brian and I saw Scott and
Pedro riding up for breakfast at No Name. We chose to dine at Moma and
made it in time for breakfast (except for pancakes.) Time = 1:53, Avg
speed = 15.6mph. Not bad for a few first-timers (and a
recently-lazy-bones like myself)! Thanks for the nice ride guys.

First RWS2G - Awesome ride

I rode on Fri for the first time to work on the SF2G bayway route by
starting in Redwood Shores and what an exhilarting feeling. Nat Criou
met me in Redwood Shores to help me navigate the route and feel
confident that I would not get hopelessly lost or be stuck with a
mechanical problem. Othman met us around Menlo Park and rode with us.
Brett "the tiger" Crosby was hot tailing us but we did not meet him
and did not know he was behind us as he was non-commital the night
before,

Thank you to the hard core members of this list for introducing me to
and encouraging me to try to ride to work. I felt so totally awesome
all day. If I could make the logistics work (of getting my bike back
home, leaving my car here etc.) and there was an earlier ride group I
would do it every day. Just the sheer energy and endorphins I have
felt all day has been like a drug. I am hooked and I want it every
day. Wow! what a feeling. Thank you for pushing me. Scott's advice of
don't try this alone was accurate. I would have got hopelessly lost.
There was a point where Nat got off the bike, pushed it up a dirt
path, crossed a bridge and went down a sheer 5 foot drop on the other
side. That is when I realized that among the recreational groups at
Google, SF2G has got to be maddest of them all. Who rides 50 miles to
work? Unless of course you have taken the hit. And once you have
ridden the tiger you cant dismount.

630am Peets Skyline 3/27/08

Ride Report:

- 7 riders (1 gear marius, othman, chris, space, new rider michael,
jen, and me) left from the cold, cold city
- marius attacked the skyline hill with gusto almost making it to the
top solo before chris and space joined him near the summit
- fast ride all the way to canada where we met PC and Ron (?)
- faster ride on the canada tt and i am pretty sure we were near our
all time best for those 4 hard miles
- michael and jen rolled on to menlo park while the rest of us took
the portola loop
- there was a brief quiet spell before we hammered through the loop
- rolled into Goog just in time for hot chocolate and oatmeal
- Sadly, this was Chris' swan song ride to the Goog. We'll all miss
drafting behind you.
- It was great riding with you and we'll see you on the road again
just not to MV.

Fwd: First time / single speed

Awesome cycle this morning -- my first SF2G! Thanks to everyone who
showed me the way. I'm hooked.

GPS Track here:
http://sites.google.com/a/dmountain.com/dmountain/actions/My-First-SF2G-Cycle-

Highlights:
- seeing the city at dusk
- feral cats around tidelands park
- canada geese
- 3 747s
- cycling through clouds of tiny insects
- not being rained on
- wind at our backs
- not holding anyone up
- getting to work in time for my 10am meeting

I lost my back light, but I found someone else's -- is it one of yours?

And can someone describe the various hand signals we use?

Donal

Re: RRR 03/05 0630

ride report:

Osmond and his tandoori went awol, but were replaced by the wily Topher, who gave us the honor and rare privilege of personally leading us thru his namesake Topher's Twin-Dolphin Twist (TTT), which replaces the vomitous trash&diesel-fume road to san mateo airport.  joining were altendizzorf, marius3, bcizzle, and yours truly, as well as an all-vintage chap from tahoe on a cool orange Merckx and pre-co-opted-by-the-gay-movement rainbow-festooned Spectrum Cycles jersey.  marius served him a traditional viking hors d'oeuvre of 25mph leadout thru the foster city perimeter, which seemed to sate his hunger for punishment.

greeted with the usual passive-aggressive "sorry you missed breakfast (sucker!)" signs at no-name, but feasted nonetheless.

3/4 Skyline 630am Peets

Ride Report:

- Met up with Lorenzo at Skyline and John Daly where I realized I got
a flat on the climb up. 4th flat on the Panracer tire in less than 250
miles.
- Fixed my tire and Eric H. showed up just in time to roll out, he
flatted coming from the Mission
- The 3 of us started to climb Skyline when Eric flatted again not 2
minutes into the climb
- After a quick change we were off to meet Ryan at 92/Canada
- SCT was pleasantly cool and green
- Met Ryan on the descent down to the 92 intersection
- The 4 of us rolled through Canada Rd but our paceline was messy, not
our fastest 4 miles
- Even with the flats we took the Portola Loop
- Ryan and Eric set the agenda for the rest of the ride and Lorenzo
was following with ease
- However, their pace put me in the hurt locker and they threw away
the key - I was happy just to keep them in my line of sight
- Rolled into Goog at 10 am under beautiful weather, in fact, the
entire ride was beautiful
