SF2G: Barway!

Barway!

By Matt Ghering, Organizizer

Holy shit. This was awesome! The crew, the route, the bars: everything was spot on.

I could write a book, but I'll keep it to the highlights by bar for the sake of brevity.

The Sports Page

A skeleton crew -- Scott, Jen, myself, xton and Ammon show for a (surprise, surprise) late start.

The Nuthouse

The crew fills out with the addition of Theo, Ted and Isaias. We do whiskey shots. This is possibly a poor decision. Peanuts, on the other hand, are definitely delicious. Unfortunately, they don't absorb much alcohol.

Martin's

The fancy pants stop on the tour. We are initially ignored despite being one of three tables in the place. Nevertheless, we achieve our goal. The illustrious scotch egg (sub. pickled veggies for non-meat eaters). They are all they're cracked up to be (pun intended) and more! Although, I'm not sure I could handle the full-sized version. Martin's servers a miniature quail-sized version. We have still not found anything to absorb the booze. I achieve peak drunkenness and begin to worry this ride was a bad idea.

Steamies

Upon arriving at Steamies, I have renewed faith in my vision. We have a changing of the guards. Isaias departs. Green Boogers arrives. An irreplaceable loss, and an immeasurable gain. We soldier on. xton departs for an early appointment at Benders.

The Dog House

After an unexpected pit stop to fix a flat down by the railroad tracks, we, appropriately, enter stage west into an outtake from the wrestler. A real dive, the Dog House boasts its own local sausage vendor and a leonine bartender who must way in at close to 300#. This may be my new favorite bar in the greater SF area. Just thinking about now has me trying to figure out a way to become a regular. I can almost taste the sausage, and I could stare over my Budweiser into these deep, soulful eyes forever.

Molloy's

Gandalf like, Ammon guides during our darkest night along a beautiful bike path through south SF (Props go out to Ammon for his incredible route finding. It definitely made the trip!). After a short photo op with a giant dog sculpture, we arrive at bar #6.

Almost cut on account of time, Molloy's was definitely another diamond rough. Or, perhaps more appropriately, the engagement ring on a corpse? Right across from the cemetery in Colma, a crew of Harley riders gave us a hearty welcome to this historic roadhouse. Inside we were greeted by basically the entire Colma FD/PD and a buffet of free homemade food one of them brought to the bar. Chicken wings and chocolate chip cookie for dinner it is!

Broken Record

Having fought hard to keep this bar on the list, I have to admit it's the only one I would cut. Lots of talk of fighting and a feeling that at any moment violence could break out made the Broken Record less than appealing. It also didn't help that the girl at the bar was having none of my advances :(

A shot of whiskey and we were on our way.

Bender's

Home sweet home! Scott tries to bail. I try to bail, but the group holds together. We end the night with a pitcher of the only two things certain in this world: Death and Taxes. They say life is never so sweet.
